Description

In this Video Abstract, Dr. Ivy Defoe discusses the JCPP paper she led entitled “A multi-level meta-analysis on the association between cannabis use among adolescent siblings”. The vast majority of substance use therapies for youth typically only focus on the parent-child dyad, while neglecting the role of siblings. However, this meta-analysis revealed that when it comes to youth cannabis use (disorder), whether a sibling uses cannabis is a strong predictor. Hence, the sibling-youth dyad matters, too. And the effectiveness of treatments for youth with cannabis use problems could likely improve if the overlooked influence of siblings is considered.

Learning Objectives

1. Synthesize the results of studies on the magnitude of association between sibling-youth cannabis use
2. Compare the magnitudes of the association between sibling-youth cannabis use versus peer-youth cannabis use versus parent-youth cannabis use.
